Research #1 - Robert Mapplethorpe

For my first piece of research, I would like to focus on Robert Mapplethorpe.

Mapplethorpe challenged the norm, creating a place and giving the deserved importance to the outcasts. He was a photographer and he had something else. The unique vision for that time, being a true pioneer. In his works there was all kind of models, with special focus on queer people, female bodybuilders, naked black men and BDSM culture. The type of things that would not be advertised or portrayed among all the Media that naturally catch the attention since it was not a common content disposed for everyone to see.

"From portraits of iconic figures in the art and music world to powerful and moving self-portraits" (tate.org.uk, n.d.). The influence was undeniable. Mapplerthorpe reached the audience, touched the little secrets or curious fantasies maybe hidden behind the layers of prejudice and innocence within themselves and left his mark, being an inspirational photographer that in the beginning, did not even enjoyed photography.

He is one of the best inspirations for my project, not only because his portraits are still remarkable, but also because with a simple picture, he could cause a riot. He would result in exaggerated reactions from the public and simultaneously give space for minorities to speak and to have a presence.
